Our world’s resources are far from infinite. Water is one of the most critical resource worldwide. In today’s scenario, where water is becoming a global concern and the world sees a widespread drought in the near future while some places are facing the drought in current situations; it has become very important for each one of us to follow the principles of the 3 R’s of Water Conservation - Reduce, Recycle & Reuse Water.
REDUCE
First and foremost we have to REDUCE the overall usage of water. Although we cannot totally stop the wastage of water but there are generic scenarios in our day to day lives where we tend to waste water such as Over Flushing, Long Baths, Simply Leaving the Taps Open etc. Such kinds of water wastage can easily be eliminated.
Water is available in abundance on the planet but the irony is that only 0.3% of the water is available for use. Still if we waste water then we are simply pushing ourselves towards a situation of Drought.
Low Usage of Water + Low Wastage of Water = High Water Conservation is the mantra for Sustainability.
REUSE
So we all have used this termed in our EVS subjects but have never implemented the idea of Water Reuse. Yes we can reuse water but the question is how…? So for many of us it’s like once the water is used it goes down the drain and that’s the end. But instead of letting this used water go down the drain we can redirect it for reuse. The used water from the bath, laundry or sinks is called the Grey Water. This water can be treated at various levels thereby removing the chemicals waste, solid substances and other contaminants and thus giving us pure and drinkable water. Many countries have already resorted to such Water Conservation Techniques and it’s high time that even we should opt for the same. This will therefore decrease the pressure of Fresh Water.
RECYCLE
What You Take From Earth, You Must Give Back. That’s Nature’s Way.
The nature gives us what we need for our survival and therefore it’s our duty to not waste nature’s resources. Rainwater which is the source of Fresh Water, is simply drained down the sewer lines thereby making it unusable for usage. Rainwater Harvesting is the best solution to save rainwater from going into sewage which will also help us to avoid drought situations. Again we can achieve pure and drinkable water if this rainwater is passed through various Water Treatment Processes for purification. This Reclaimed Water can be used for our day to day activities. These days we can see that many complexes have installed such systems but more such systems must be installed for maximum conservation. This will surely help us to overcome the scarcity of water and revitalize the groundwater levels.
It is true that if we follow the path of 3 R’s, we can definitely overcome the critical situations that the world is facing or will face in the near future and do our duty towards our future generations.
Let Us Conserve Water.! Let Us Give Future Generation Their Right.
